The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched WhatsApp-based services to help members access key Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) account details without having to visit an EPFO office
or navigate its online portal.
The services were launched on November 1, on the occasion of EPFO’s Foundation Day, by Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya. The initiative marks another step towards expanding digital access to provident fund services.
“On the occasion of the EPFO Foundation Day, EPFO Services on WhatsApp were launched by Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Minister of Labour and Employment and Youth Affairs and Sports, marking another significant milestone in EPFO’s digital journey,” the EPFO said in a post on X on Sunday, November 1.
Under the new facility, EPFO members can check their EPF balance, view their last five transactions and download their EPF passbook through WhatsApp. Members can access these services by sending a message to +91 8796441800 or scanning the QR code shared by EPFO.

The facility is expected to make it easier for subscribers to access basic account information through a messaging platform they already use, reducing the need to log in to separate digital services for routine queries.
How to Check EPF Balance on WhatsApp
EPFO members can follow these steps to access their account details through WhatsApp:
- Save the official EPFO WhatsApp number, +91 8796441800, on their mobile phone.
- Open WhatsApp and send a message saying “Hi” to the number.
- Follow the instructions provided in the chat to access the available EPFO services.
- Select the relevant option to check the EPF balance, view the last five transactions or download the passbook.
Members can also scan the QR code shared in EPFO’s official announcement to access the service. Subscribers should use the official number published by EPFO and avoid sharing their EPF account credentials, passwords or OTPs with unauthorised individuals.
What Services Are Available Through EPFO WhatsApp?
The new facility provides access to three key services.
Check EPF balance: Members can check their provident fund balance through the WhatsApp service instead of navigating the EPFO portal for this basic account query.
View the last five transactions: Subscribers can access details of their five most recent transactions, helping them review recent activity in their EPF accounts.
Download EPF passbook: Members can download their EPF passbook through the messaging platform. The passbook helps subscribers review their provident fund contributions and account transactions.
The services are particularly useful for members who want to check their account details without going through multiple steps on a website or mobile application.
EPFO Expands Digital Services for Members
EPFO has been expanding its digital services to make provident fund-related processes more accessible to its members. The WhatsApp initiative adds another channel through which subscribers can access routine account information.
The new facility could be useful for salaried employees who want to monitor their provident fund contributions, check recent transactions or access their passbook while on the move.
However, members should note that the WhatsApp facility has been announced for specific services, including balance enquiries, the last five transactions and passbook downloads. The announcement does not establish that all EPFO services, such as claim settlement, withdrawals or profile corrections, are available through WhatsApp.
Members requiring other services may still need to use the official EPFO portal or the relevant designated service.
What EPFO Members Should Know
The WhatsApp service provides a convenient way to access basic EPF account information, but members should rely on official EPFO channels for account-related queries and transactions.
Subscribers should also verify the information displayed through the service against their EPF passbook or other official account records whenever necessary.
With the launch of WhatsApp-based services, EPFO is seeking to simplify access to frequently used account information and make its digital services more convenient for provident fund subscribers.
