If you are planning to travel from Indira Gandhi International Airport in the coming days, here is an important update. One of the airport’s four runways, 11R/29L, will remain closed from February 25 to May
25, 2026.
Runway 11R/29L To Remain Shut For 3 Months
According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the runway is being closed for essential repairs, maintenance and upgrades. During these three months, no aircraft will be permitted to land or take off from 11R/29L.
The closure coincides with the onset of the peak summer travel season, when passenger traffic typically rises sharply.
Flight Operations To Continue As Scheduled
Despite the temporary shutdown, DIAL has assured passengers that overall flight operations will not be significantly disrupted. On average, around 1,520 flights operate daily at Delhi Airport. Even with the runway closure, the airport plans to handle approximately 1,514 flight movements per day to minimise inconvenience.
During the previous closure of runway 28/10 for maintenance, nearly 200 flights per day were affected. This time, airport authorities say they are preparing well in advance to prevent similar disruptions.
Why Is The Runway Being Closed?
The primary reason for the closure is rehabilitation work. This includes resurfacing the runway and constructing a new rapid-exit taxiway to improve aircraft movement efficiency. In addition, the latest Instrument Landing System (ILS) will be installed, enabling safer flight operations during adverse weather conditions and low visibility.
Long-distance and ultra-long-haul flights, which often require specific runway configurations for take-off, will be managed with special operational arrangements where necessary.
Strict Monitoring And Coordination
Tower supervisors have been assigned special responsibility to ensure strict adherence to closure protocols. All airlines and concerned agencies have already been formally notified about the temporary suspension of operations on runway 11R/29L.
Airport officials emphasise that while passengers may experience minor inconvenience, the upgrades are essential to ensure a safer, smoother and more efficient flying experience in the long term.
