Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam for two days starting Saturday, with a packed schedule focused on growth and public works. During the visit, the biggest highlight of the trip is the opening
of the new terminal 2 of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati. The terminal is special because it is India’s first airport terminal built around a nature-based theme. It is expected to improve air travel and give Assam’s transport system a strong push.
The building is planned with care for the environment. It runs on solar energy, uses systems to save and reuse water and allows plenty of daylight inside. Even before its official inauguration, the airport received the International Architectural Award 2025 in the Transport category, making it a proud moment for Assam.
Inauguration And PM Narendra Modi Visit
Terminal 2 of Lokpriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati will be opened on December 20. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the city especially for this event. Once the new terminal starts operations, it will be able to manage a large number of travellers at busy hours. During peak time, the building can handle around 4300 domestic passengers and over 200 international passengers. This new facility is expected to reduce crowding and make travel easier for people flying to and from Guwahati.
Modi announced his visit on X and wrote, “I will reach Guwahati, Assam tomorrow, 20th December. In the afternoon, the new terminal building of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport will be inaugurated. This is a major boost to Assam’s infrastructure. Increased capacity means better ‘Ease of Living’ and a boost for commerce as well as tourism.”

New Guwahati Airport Features
The new terminal at Guwahati Airport covers almost 1.4 lakh square metres and can manage close to 1.3 crore passengers every year. To support this growth, the airport has also improved its runway, parking areas for aircraft and taxi paths. The airport also uses modern technology to make travel smooth and easy. Security checks are quicker with full body scanners that do not disturb passengers. Baggage is handled by automated machines, which will help bags reach the right place faster. Immigration counters work faster for both arrival and departure.
The design of the building is inspired by Assam’s natural beauty and local culture. It takes ideas from bamboo and orchids, which are important to the region. A large amount of bamboo from the Northeast has been used in the building. Green areas inspired by Kaziranga, traditional japi patterns and the famous one horned rhino can be seen across the terminal. There are also many pillars shaped like orchids, showing the beauty of the Kopou flower. One special feature is the Sky Forest, filled with many native plants, which will give passengers the feeling of walking in a green forest as soon as they arrive.
