Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed support for a potential agreement with Iran that would eliminate Tehran’s enriched uranium stockpiles and dismantle its nuclear infrastructure, following
a phone call with US President Donald Trump amid rapidly evolving negotiations.
The conversation came hours after Trump unexpectedly announced on social media that a deal with Iran was nearing completion, a claim that reportedly caught Netanyahu by surprise as he was meeting with senior Israeli security officials to discuss developments related to Tehran.
According to a readout from the Israeli prime minister’s office, Netanyahu “expressed his appreciation” to Trump for his commitment that any final agreement would “remove Tehran’s enriched uranium, dismantle its nuclear infrastructure, limit its missile production and halt its support for regional proxies.”
What Did Netanyahu Say About Proposed Iran Deal?
In its summary of the call, Netanyahu’s office said the prime minister welcomed Trump’s commitment to ensuring that any final agreement addresses Israel’s core security concerns. The readout said Netanyahu backed an agreement that would “remove Tehran’s enriched uranium, dismantle its nuclear infrastructure, limit its missile production and halt its support for regional proxies.”
How Does That Compare With Trump’s Public Position?
Several of the priorities highlighted by Netanyahu have been largely absent from Trump’s recent public remarks. In recent days, the US president has focused primarily on Iran’s nuclear programme, particularly the handling of enriched uranium and Tehran’s commitment not to pursue a nuclear weapon.
Earlier, Trump said Iran had agreed “conceptually” to abandon any effort to acquire nuclear arms. He said, “They will not have a nuclear weapon, they’ve agreed to that. They will not only not have, they will not purchase, develop in any way, any shape or form a nuclear weapon.”
However, Trump has not publicly emphasized Iran’s ballistic missile programme or support for regional proxy groups in recent weeks, despite those issues being longstanding concerns for Israel.
Why Is The Timing Significant?
The call came shortly after Trump’s surprise Truth Social post in which he claimed that negotiations had reached an advanced stage and that a signing ceremony could be announced soon. According to reports, the announcement caught Netanyahu by surprise while he was meeting with top Israeli security officials to discuss Iran. Trump later reinforced his optimism, describing the emerging accord as a “great settlement” and saying the agreement documents were in “pretty final shape.”
“That should be done pretty quickly,” the US President said.
