Steve Smith looks rusty.
He may have scored a century on Sheffield Shield return, which would be music to the ears of Australia fans ahead of the Ashes 2025-26, but there’s still an area of concern.
On Monday,
Smith walked out for the toss as he captained his domestic side, New South Wales, for the first time in eight years against Victoria at the Sydney Cricket Ground. However, he failed to properly toss the coin, leaving the commentators amused.
The coin barely rose before crashing onto the ground. The Victoria skipper won the toss and opted to bat first.
“Look at that! I think he needs practice tossing the coin. That was a shocker. That didn’t get above hip height,” quipped a commentator.
“He has almost thrown that into the ground,” said another.
Early entry for funniest moment of the season🤣

Smith will certainly hope for a better showing at the toss later this month when he leads Australia against England in the first Ashes Test at Perth Stadium. The batting star will lead the hosts in the absence of Pat Cummins, who has been ruled out from the series opener due to an injury.
Smith was sacked as Australia captain following the ball-tampering scandal in 2018. However, he has since filled in for Cummins six times since the right-arm pacer took over the reins in November 2021.
“We flip into Steve Smith being the captain, and we’re incredibly fortunate to have such an experienced captain himself,” Australia head coach Andrew McDonald had said. “They’re a good working couple, so to speak… and Paddy will be around the group as well. So he’ll come to Perth with us, I can declare that.”
