Travelling between Mumbai and Pune is likely to become faster and smoother, as the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) plans a significant upgrade of the expressway. With rising vehicle
numbers and frequent congestion, authorities have proposed expanding the existing corridor to 10 lanes.
The decision comes in response to increasing traffic pressure on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, one of the busiest routes in the state. Officials believe that widening the highway will help ease bottlenecks and improve overall travel efficiency.
MSRDC Managing Director Anil Gaikwad stated that groundwork and preparatory steps are underway, with construction expected to begin after the monsoon season.
Timeline And Execution Strategy
The expansion project is expected to take around three years to complete. Authorities are targeting completion by 2029-30.
To minimise inconvenience to commuters, the work will be carried out in phases. This phased execution is aimed at ensuring that traffic flow remains largely unaffected during construction.
Funding Through Loans, Toll Period Likely To Extend
The large-scale infrastructure upgrade will be financed through loans from financial institutions. To repay these borrowings, officials are considering extending the toll collection period.
Currently, toll collection on the expressway is scheduled to end in 2045. However, under the new proposal, this period may be extended by an additional 15 years, pushing it to 2060.
While this could mean higher long-term costs for commuters, authorities argue that improved travel speed and reduced congestion will offset the burden.
‘Missing Link’ Project Nearing Completion
Alongside the expansion, a key infrastructure component, the much-awaited ‘missing link’ project, is also nearing completion. This 13-km stretch is expected to be opened to traffic in May.
The new link will significantly cut down travel distance through the ghat section and provide a more direct route, bypassing the winding roads of Lonavala and Khandala.
Faster, Safer Travel Ahead
Once both the expansion and the missing link are operational, commuters can expect a noticeable reduction in travel time between Mumbai and Pune. The upgrades are also expected to improve road safety and reduce traffic snarls, making the journey more predictable and comfortable.
Overall, the project reflects a broader push to modernise critical transport infrastructure in Maharashtra, keeping pace with growing mobility demands.
