Walmart-owned e-commerce giant Flipkart is preparing to enter India’s food delivery market within the next 30 days, according to a report by The Times of India (TOI). The company is expected to begin with a pilot
launch in Bengaluru before deciding on a wider rollout.
According to the TOI report, Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy said food delivery is another important use case within the company’s broader e-commerce platform. He said Flipkart will first launch a pilot, learn from customer feedback, and then decide how to expand the service across the country.
The report added that the company is exploring a separate app for food delivery while also making the service available through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
Flipkart sees room for new players
Despite Swiggy and Zomato dominating the food delivery market, Krishnamurthy believes there is still scope for new entrants. Speaking to TOI, he said the industry continues to evolve and that disruption has always created opportunities for new businesses.
As per Datum Intelligence estimates cited by TOI, Zomato held around 57% of India’s food delivery market at the end of December, while Swiggy accounted for the remaining 43%.
Building on its e-commerce ecosystem
Krishnamurthy told TOI that Flipkart has steadily expanded beyond its original books business into categories such as electronics, fashion, groceries and travel services. He said India’s e-commerce market has followed a similar growth path seen globally, gradually moving from books and electronics to daily essentials and consumables.
He also noted that while quick commerce has seen disruption from players like Blinkit and Zepto, Flipkart remains focused on delivering value to customers rather than competing only on price.
Focus on Gen Z consumers
Krishnamurthy said Gen Z has become a key customer segment for Flipkart. According to TOI, he said the company has a strong presence among younger consumers across categories such as fashion, electronics, beauty and home products.
He added that Gen Z customers increasingly prefer spending on experiences such as travel and dining, a trend also reflected on Flipkart-owned travel platform Cleartrip. He also highlighted the growing role of live commerce and video-based shopping experiences in attracting younger users.
Flipkart has not yet announced an official launch date or disclosed further details about its food delivery plans.
