Having won their opening game against the Lucknow Super Giants by six wickets, Axar Patel-led the Delhi Capitals would still expect a better performance from the likes of KL Rahul, Pathum Nissanka and
Nitish Rana, when they take on the Mumbai Indians in the first afternoon game of IPL 2026 on Saturday, April 4, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Delhi, who shuffled as many as seven opening combinations last year, had hoped for greater stability this season, but early signs suggest the problem persists.
Besides Rahul and Nissanka, Delhi have an opening batter in Prithvi Shaw, but it is highly unlikely that the franchise will lose patience in the duo, with a win already under their belt.
Chasing a modest 142 against Lucknow Super Giants in their opener, DC’s top order collapsed early; Rahul fell for a first-ball duck, while Rana and Nissanka followed in quick succession, leaving the team reeling at 26/4.
What followed was a calm and mature response from 22-year-old impact substitute Sameer Rizvi, who struck an unbeaten fifty. Partnering with the experienced Tristan Stubbs, the duo steered the side to a six-wicket victory over LSG.
While Rizvi’s fearless strokeplay stood out, the vulnerability at the top is a concern against an MI attack marshalled by the redoubtable Jasprit Bumrah.
Still chasing their maiden IPL title, the Capitals will be keen to find greater stability at the top. They can turn to either Abishek Porel, who showed promise last season, or Shaw, who continues to struggle with consistency.
In contrast, DC’s bowling unit looked far more assured even in the absence of Aussie quick Mitchell Starc, who remains unavailable.
South African pacer Lungi Ngidi has continued to rely on his variations, while T Natarajan, returning after a long injury layoff, chipped in with a three-for against LSG. Mukesh Kumar, meanwhile, kept things tight with an economical spell.
The spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and skipper Axar Patel, as expected, applied the squeeze through the middle overs, ensuring the opposition never broke free.
This mix of pace variations and spin control will be crucial for Delhi against Mumbai’s power-packed batting line-up, featuring the likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.
MI will enter the contest brimming with confidence after snapping a 14-year opening-match jinx with a record chase against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Rohit rolled back the years with a blazing 78, marking his T20 return in emphatic style. Fellow opener Ryan Rickelton, preferred over the more experienced Quinton de Kock, offered strong support with a belligerent 81 and could retain his spot.
Their bowling, though expensive, had its moments. Shardul Thakur picked up three crucial wickets, while Bumrah and Trent Boult kept things tight.
MI deployed Suryakumar as an Impact Player because of a minor groin concern and it remains to be seen whether the India T20I skipper will be fit enough to play a full role at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Saturday.
