In his address to the nation amid the war in Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted Washington “doesn’t need Middle East oil”, adding the U.S. military is here to “help them”.
“We have plenty of gas.
We have so much gas. No country like us anywhere in the world. US imports no oil”, Trump said.
He further called on nations that import oil from Strait of Hormuz to “take the lead” as the conflict in West Asia continues to escalate. “Countries take oil from Hormuz. Those countries should take lead”, he said.
The U.S. President further claimed Washington has more oil and gas than “Saudi Arabia and Russia combined”. “We produce more oil and gas than Saudi Arabia and Russia combined”, he said.
When Will Strait of Hormuz Reopen?
Donald Trump emphasised the Strait of Hormuz will “open naturally” once the conflict is over, adding the “hard part is done”.
“We will be taking the lead but countries that can’t pass should take the lead. Buy from US. Build delayed courage, go to the strait and take it. Hard part is done. Once the conflict is over, the strait will reopen naturally”, he said.
The Strait of Hormuz — a critical maritime chokepoint which accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas trade — was effectively blocked by Iran in the wake of the coordinated U.S.-Israeli strikes.
The blockade of the critical waterway saw several countries getting embroiled into surging energy prices, with supplies getting hit across the globe.
