Daniel Radcliffe, best known for portraying the young wizard in the Harry Potter film series, has revealed that he sometimes turned to alcohol and smoking to “cope with anxiety” during his years on set.
Drawing from his experience growing up in the spotlight, he has spoken candidly about the mental health pressures faced by child actors.
Radcliffe believes that therapy should be mandatory for young performers in the entertainment industry, emphasising that the intense pressures of fame can quietly take a toll, even when their lives appear glamorous to the outside world.
Why Radcliffe Believes Therapy Should Be Mandatory?
During an appearance on Bustle’s “One Nightstand With Daniel Radcliffe,” the actor explained why proactive mental health support should be built into the system for child actors.
Radcliffe recalled the tragic story of a young actor he once knew who later died by suicide, believing he had no right to complain because people believed he had “everything” — fame, money, and success.
“The illusion that child stars are living a perfect dream can be crushing behind the scenes, which is exactly why therapy should be built into the system,” Radcliffe said.
He also emphasised that therapy is most effective when started early, even before someone feels they truly need it, as a way to maintain mental resilience and prevent deeper struggles.
Limited Mental Health Support in the Early 2000s
Radcliffe noted that when the Harry Potter films began production in the early 2000s in the United Kingdom, mental health resources were not widely discussed or prioritised within the industry.
Despite that, he considers himself fortunate to have been surrounded by supportive colleagues and mentors who helped make his experience largely positive.
Daniel Radcliffe’s Career So Far
Daniel Radcliffe became a household name after portraying the titular character of wizard Harry Potter in the iconic fantasy film franchise when he was merely 12. He appeared in all eight Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2011.
Since then, the actor has built a diverse career across film, television, and stage. He made his Broadway debut in the 2008 revival of Equus and later appeared in productions such as 2011’s revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, 2014’s The Cripple of Inishmaan, 2018’s The Lifespan of a Fact, and the 2023 revival of Merrily We Roll Along.
