The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has written an official e-mail to Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi to hand over the Asia Cup trophy back to India. Naqvi, who also holds
the post of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman and is a minister in Pakistan, left the Dubai International Cricket Stadium with the Asia Cup 2025 trophy after India refused to take the winner’s trophy from him following their five-wicket win over Pakistan in the final on September 28.
According to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, as quoted by India Today, BCCI are awaiting a response from Naqvi; if there is no reply from his side, then they will escalate the matter to ICC with an official mail.
The Asia Cup trophy is currently at the ACC office in Dubai, and it was reported on October 10 that there are strict instructions that the Asia Cup trophy should not be moved or handed over without Naqvi’s approval.
According to a source close to Naqvi, the trophy remains in the ACC offices in Dubai with explicit instructions from Naqvi that it should not be moved or handed over to anyone without his approval and personal presence. Naqvi has indicated that he will personally hand over the trophy to the Indian team or the BCCI whenever that happens.
“As of today the trophy is still in ACC offices in Dubai with clear instructions from Naqvi that it should not be moved or handed over to anyone without his approval and in-person presence,” a source close to Naqvi was quoted as saying to PTI on October 10, 2025.
“Naqvi has given clear instructions that only he will hand over the trophy in person (whenever that happens) to the Indian team or BCCI,” the source added.
What is the controversy?
The Asia Cup was marred by Indo-Pak hostilities, with Indian players refusing to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts throughout the tournament and both sides engaging in politically charged gestures. Naqvi also made political statements on his social media pages.
