The Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP) on Sunday arrested the 27-year-old daily wage labourer who allegedly attacked Alok Kumar Singh, 33, after a minor argument over alighting the train at Malad
railway station. According to the Borivali GRP, the accused, Omkar Eknath Shinde, was apprehended from the Kurar area of the western suburb within 12 hours of the murder on Saturday evening. Shinde has been arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway, he added.
How the minor argument escalated on Saturday
Singh, a math and statistics professor with NM College in Vile Parle, boarded a Borivli-bound local from Vile Parle on Saturday. As the train reached Malad around 6.30pm, an argument broke out between him and Shinde, a labourer engaged in metal polishing work, while alighting.
“The accused stabbed him with a sharp object in the stomach, got off the train and fled,” TOI quoted a police official as saying.
Despite his injuries, Singh managed to get off the train but collapsed on the platform.
Singh was taken to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivli, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The hospital authorities stated he had knife injuries in his abdomen.
CCTV footage helped in identification
The CCTV footage showed the man in a white shirt and blue jeans running across the foot overbridge (FOB) shortly after the attack.
“He was identified and apprehended with the help of CCTV footage, the official said.
Calm and polite, never got involved in fights, say colleagues
Singh had joined the college in 2024. “He was a very kind soul, very calm and polite and never got involved in any kind of arguments or fights. In fact, he used to help resolve fights. This is absolutely shocking for us,” a teacher told TOI.
“We have witnesses from the train compartment who saw the accused and overheard the argument on the day of the incident. We are quizzing them and recording their statements. CCTV footage from Malad and previous railway stations is being scanned for leads,” the TOI report said.
“He got married only a couple of years ago and lived in Malad East with his wife. His uncle was also a teacher. We are aghast at what has happened and want police to track down the culprit at the earliest,” said the colleague.
