With less than two weeks left for Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the state is witnessing a war on social media. Political parties are turning platforms like X, Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp into a parallel
campaign arena where narratives are being built, attacked and dismantled in real time.
From AI-generated videos to meme-driven propaganda and targeted influencer campaigns, parties including DMK, AIADMK, BJP, TVK and NTK—are investing heavily in digital war rooms to dominate online perception, especially among young and first-time voters.
Experts say this election is increasingly being fought on screens rather than streets, with short-form videos, reels and viral posts shaping political discourse more than traditional rallies.
AI tools have added a new layer to the contest. Deepfake videos, fake speeches and digitally altered clips of leaders are being widely circulated, often blurring the line between fact and fabrication. While parties use these tools for outreach and engagement, concerns are rising over misinformation and ethical boundaries.
According to analysts, every party now maintains dedicated “war rooms” focused on online reputation management, sentiment tracking and hyper-local content targeting. The goal is no longer just mobilisation on the ground, but control of the digital narrative before it reaches voters.
A recent trend shows campaigns becoming highly personalised and emotionally driven, with AI-generated content and meme wars designed to go viral within hours. Platforms such as Instagram Reels and WhatsApp forwards are emerging as key battlegrounds for influence.
Officials have also flagged concerns over the misuse of AI in political messaging. The State Election machinery has tightened monitoring of deepfake content and directed parties to clearly label AI-generated material, with swift takedown mechanisms for misleading posts.
With smartphone penetration rising and digital consumption at its peak, political observers believe the 2026 Tamil Nadu election may be the first in the state where online perception could significantly influence electoral outcomes.
Tamil Nadu assembly elections 2026 will be held in a single phase on April 23, 2026, for all 234 seats. According to the Election Commission of India, the counting of votes for Tamil Nadu, along with other states, will take place on May 4, 2026.
