The death toll from floods in Assam rose to 68 after two more people lost their lives, even as the flood situation continued to improve on Sunday. However, more than 5.24 lakh people remain affected across
five districts, according to an official bulletin.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said over 5,24,700 people have been impacted in the districts of Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar.
The bulletin, issued late on Sunday, stated that two people drowned in floodwaters in Charaideo district during the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll higher.
Among the affected districts, Charaideo remains the worst hit with nearly 1.9 lakh people impacted. Sivasagar follows with more than 1.5 lakh affected residents, while around 1.4 lakh people have been affected in Jorhat.
The situation has eased compared to Saturday, when close to 6.55 lakh people were impacted across six districts.
According to the ASDMA, authorities are running 354 relief camps and relief distribution centres in four districts, where 37,724 displaced people are being sheltered.
The bulletin added that rescue operations have been carried out by the Army, NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Service, and the police in different parts of Upper Assam.
Currently, floodwaters have submerged 763 villages across the state, while damage has been reported over 48,742.09 hectares of agricultural land.
The ASDMA said embankments, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure have also sustained damage in several districts.
It further noted that the Dhansiri river at Numaligarh continues to flow above the danger mark.
The bulletin added that widespread flooding has affected 88,240 domestic animals and poultry across Assam.
