An explosion at a police station in Nowgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday night claimed at least nine lives and left 29 others injured. Police officials fear the toll may rise, with at least six of the injured reported
to be in critical condition.
The explosion took place while a police team, accompanied by a magistrate and forensic experts, was examining explosive materials linked to the Red Fort blast investigation. These explosives had been recovered as part of the probe into the Faridabad terror module in connection with the Delhi attack.
According to officials, the blast was sudden and extremely powerful, causing extensive damage within the police station premises. Initial reports suggest that the explosives may have detonated accidentally during the handling or sampling process, though the exact cause is yet to be confirmed.
The injured were quickly transported to the Indian Army’s 92 Base Hospital as well as the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) for urgent treatment. Medical teams are on high alert as several victims battle life-threatening injuries.
Senior police officers, including top officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, rushed to the site soon after the incident. The entire area has been sealed off as investigations continue, and forensic teams are working to determine what triggered the explosion.
