France forward Michael Olise entered his name into the history books on Saturday (July 18) by breaking Pelé’s record of six assists in a single edition of the FIFA World Cup.
The 24-year-old, England-born
France star provided two assists for Kylian Mbappé in France’s FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place play-off match against England in Miami to take his tally to seven assists in the ongoing tournament.
Olise assisted Mbappé’s first goal in the 48th minute to equal Pelé’s tally and then set up the France captain once again in the 66th minute to move ahead of the Brazilian legend.
During the 1970 FIFA World Cup, Pelé had provided six assists for his Brazilian teammates.
The all-time record for the most assists in a single FIFA World Cup edition is held by former France star Raymond Kopa, who registered eight assists for Les Bleus during the 1958 FIFA World Cup.

In the FIFA World Cup 2026, Olise set up Kylian Mbappe’s opening goal in the second half of their Group I opener against Senegal.
He then provided two assists — one for Mbappe in the 14th minute and another for Ousmane Dembele in the 66th minute — in France’s second Group I match against Iraq.
He was unable to make any goal contribution in France’s final group-stage match against Norway, but he provided one assist each for Bradley Barcola and Mbappe in the second half of Les Bleus’ Round of 32 match against Sweden at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on June 30.

Olise assisted five of Mbappé’s goals in the FIFA World Cup 2026, while the France captain finished the tournament with a total of 10 goals in eight matches.
The 10 goals scored by Mbappé extended his overall tally to 22 goals in just 22 FIFA World Cup matches, making him the highest goalscorer in the tournament’s history.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi occupies second place on the all-time list with 21 goals in 33 FIFA World Cup matches. The 39-year-old, however, will have an opportunity to reduce the gap or reclaim the top spot when Argentina face Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Sunday (July 19).
