Air travel can be tiring, and many passengers hope for a calm journey, especially on short domestic flights. A recent post on X (formerly Twitter) has brought attention to how small disturbances can quickly
spoil that experience.
The post describes a woman’s frustrating flight experience. It has sparked a wider discussion on noise and behaviour in shared spaces like planes and trains.
A Noisy Flight Left Her Upset
The woman, who was travelling to Bengaluru, described her flight as deeply unpleasant. In her post, she wrote, “Today’s flight experience was horrible. A child around 10-12 years old kept shouting constantly at his parents just to get attention, and his parents seemed to find it cute.”
She explained that she was quietly reading a book when the noise became too much. Trying to handle the situation calmly, she requested the child to lower his voice. However, the response she received shocked her. “I politely asked him to keep quiet. His mother replied, ‘This is not a library.’”
Things Only Got Louder After That
According to the post, the situation did not improve. Instead, it got worse. After the exchange, the family began playing antakshari inside the flight cabin. This turned a noisy situation into a full group activity that disturbed others around them.
The woman ended her post by expressing concern about how such behaviour is encouraged. “Some people clearly lack civic sense and unfortunately pass the same behaviour on to their children.”

Many People Shared Similar Experiences
The post was shared on January 15 and crossed over 7 lakh views within a few hours. Several users replied with their own stories. A user posted a picture of a man watching videos loudly on his phone and wrote, “This fat uncle watched reels on full volume through the flight yesterday.”
The user added that neither the nearby passengers nor the cabin crew asked him to stop. Reflecting on this, the person wrote about choosing silence for mental peace and feeling helpless about public behaviour.
The Issue Goes Beyond Flights
Other users pointed out that the problem exists in trains and other public spaces too. A comment read, “Yeah, happened to me on a train recently. We somehow have no concept of public space etiquette or ‘indoor voice’ (speaking softly).”
Another person commented, “If it’s not a library, then certainly it’s not their drawing room! Such mothers are responsible for such idiosyncratic behaviour when they are in public spaces!”
Some raised related concerns, with a person saying, “Another issue is about people talking on the phone during take-off.”
A frequent flyer summed up the struggle by writing, “I don’t remember the last time I had a quiet flight. Even in business class, you’ll end up sitting across an old couple who won’t shut up till the end of time. Apple AirPods with Active Noise Cancellation save me.”
