Moeen Ali, who is England’s ninth most-capped player in international cricket, has expressed his desire to become England’s head coach one day. According to the 38-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder, who played
68 Tests, 138 ODIs and 92 T20Is for the English team from 2014 to 2024 and even led them in the white-ball format of the game, he wants to be a top international coach, and his dream is to become England’s head coach.
Former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum is head coach of England’s men’s cricket team across all formats at present, but in the future, Moeen also wants to take the top job.
“That’s the dream (to become England’s head coach),” Moeen was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
“One hundred per cent, that’d be the dream … I think one day I would want to be a top international coach. Definitely,” he added.
According to Moeen, who is studying for his ECB Level Three qualification, he used to coach at his father Munir’s academy before he played for England. His brother Kadeer is assistant coach at Worcestershire, and his cousin Kabir is bowling coach for Warwickshire’s women. His father Munir still runs a cricket academy.
“I used to coach for my dad’s academy before I played for England,” Moeen said.
“I used to coach heavily. My brothers all coach, and coaching is part of our genetics in some ways. It’s a journey that I’ve always been on,” he added.
Moeen, by his own admission, is a massive believer in technique. But he thinks, due to the excess of T20 cricket, modern-day players are missing good and strong technique.
“I’m a massive believer in technique. I always have been”, Moeen says.
“I think the one that’s lacking in cricket right now generally, with so much T20 cricket, is technique and having the foundation of proper batting, like in Test matches.
“We (England) got exposed a little bit in Australia, in my opinion, because of probably a bit of a lack of technique at times. Of course, there’s the mental side of the game and all that, but I’m a big believer in having a good, strong technique first. The foundations have to be good, and then you can develop other stuff as well.”
