The Rip actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck revealed how streaming platforms are reshaping how movies are made today. During a promotional interview for their film The Rip, Matt Damon pointed out how filmmakers
now think differently about pacing and dialogue.
During their appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Matt Damon explained that the change happened because audiences give a different level of attention to a movie at home versus in a theatre.
Matt Damon Reveals Streaming Platforms Always ‘Reiterate the Plot’
Damon shared that earlier filmmakers would slowly build toward a big climax, but now streamers want excitement almost immediately. “The standard way to make an action movie that we learnt was, you usually have three set pieces. One in the first act, one in the second, and one in the third. You spend most of your money on that one in the third act—that’s your finale,” he shared.
Damon continued, “Now they’re like, ‘Can we get a big one in the first five minutes? We want people to stay. And it wouldn’t be terrible if you reiterated the plot three or four times in the dialogue because people are on their phones while they’re watching.’”
Ben Affleck Points Out a Strong Exception
On the other hand, Matt Damon’s co-star Ben Affleck did not fully agree to the idea. He pointed out Netflix’s limited series Adolescence as proof that shows or films do not always require a quick fix. “But then you look at adolescence, and it didn’t do any of that sh*t,” Affleck stated. “And it’s f**king great. And it’s dark too. It’s tragic and intense. This guy finds out his kid is accused of murder. There are long shots of the back of their heads. They get in the car; nobody says anything.”
While Damon thought shows like Adolescence are an exception, Affleck stated he felt the show “demonstrates you don’t have to do” the Netflix tricks to please audiences.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Team Up for The Rip
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck essay the role of two police officers within the narcotics unit of the Miami-Dade Police Department in the action thriller.
