The BJP on Monday criticised the Tamil Nadu government for granting 60 days’ parole to five life convicts in the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blasts case, stating that the decision reflected selective softness
towards convicted terrorists.
Tamil Nadu BJP chief’s spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy said that granting parole to men who helped plant bombs that destroyed families is an insult to the dead and a betrayal of the living, reported PTI.
“Personal grounds cannot override the gravity of a terror attack that remains one of the darkest chapters in the state’s history. The Tamil Nadu BJP condemns in the strongest terms the TVK government’s decision to grant 60 days’ parole to five life convicts of the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blasts,” he said in a post on X.

“On February 14, 1998, these serial bombings were carried out, in which Mohammed Ansari, Mohammed Ali, Monappa alias Mohammed Hasan, Mohammed Azam, and Nawab Khan were convicted as guilty. In this attack, 58 people were killed; more than 250 others suffered grievous injuries. Planned and executed by the banned ‘Al-Umma’ terrorist organization ahead of an election campaign rally, this attack was a brutal massacre against innocent people. The Supreme Court itself described this act as ‘most heinous’ and refused to grant bail to these convicts”, he said.
Thirupathy demanded that the decision be revoked immediately, while also insisting that no further concessions be extended to the convicts.
“This decision reeks of selective softness towards convicted terrorists. The memory of the 58 victims and the security of the public demand that this parole be revoked immediately. BJP demands the immediate cancellation of the 60-day parole orders and insists that no further concessions should be extended to Al-Umma convicts in this case,” he said.
The BJP leader stated that justice for the victims of Coimbatore cannot be traded for political calculations. “The terrorists must serve their full sentences,” Thirupathy said.
The five individuals from the Coimbatore Central Prison were granted 60-day parole based on a petition that flagged personal reasons and their health conditions, given that they have already served over 25 to 30 years in prison.
