Zimbabwe secured their place in the Super 8 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after their Group B game against Ireland at the Pallakele International Stadium in Kandy, Sri Lanka on Tuesday was abandoned due
to rain.
The result means Zimbabwe, who have 5 points from three games, including the points shared between Zimbabwe and Ireland as a result of the washed-out game, moved into the Super 8 for the first time since the introduction of the new format in the last edition.
Zimbabwe, yet unbeaten in the tournament, stand second in Group B behind co-hosts Sri Lanka, who also guaranteed progress with three wins in as many games, thereby eliminating Australia from the qualification race.
ZIM opened their campaign with an 8-wicket win over Oman and went on to shock Australia in a 23-run victory in their second fixture.
Co-hosts Sri Lanka, with an impeccable record in the ongoing event, have achieved victories over Australia, Ireland, and Oman. They currently top Group B with 6 points and have secured their advancement to the next stage of the ICC tournament on their home soil.
Former champions Australia opened their campaign with a win over Ireland, but succumbed to a shocking defeat to Zimbabwe in their second outing, before compounding their woes with yet another loss to Sri Lanka in their third and penultimate Group B fixture.
