A newly constructed flyover on the Lucknow-Kanpur highway has unexpectedly turned into a hotspot for aviation enthusiasts and curious passersby. With a clear view of the nearby Chaudhary Charan Singh International
Airport, the 1.4-kilometre stretch has become a go-to location for watching planes take off, snapping selfies, making video calls, or even smoking beedis while perched precariously on the edge.
As the sun sets and flights roar overhead, people gather along the concrete railings to get a sight of planes soaring into the sky. They are seemingly unaware of the active highway traffic, including trucks and motorcycles whizzing by.
The flyover, still under construction, was opened to ease congestion, but it has turned into a pedestrian viewing gallery.
When will the construction be complete?
Lt Col (Retd) Sharadchand Singh, Project Director at the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), confirmed that the flyover is expected to be fully completed by the end of October.
He also expressed concern over the trend, stating, “It’s a matter of civic sense.” He added, “Standing on an active flyover is risky — not just for those taking selfies, but for moving vehicles too,” reported The Times of India.
The Project Director also stated that the flyover’s current design prioritises high-speed vehicular traffic and lacks any pedestrian safeguards, signage, or barriers.
As a response to the growing number of people loitering on the stretch, NHAI is now considering the installation of noise barriers to block the runway view of the airport runway in hopes of discouraging foot traffic.
Locals think the flyover is a cool place to hang out.
Despite the warnings, locals like Ravi, a 22-year-old student, remain drawn to the spot. “It’s a cool place to hang out and watch the planes,” he says to TOI, unaware of the potential hazards.
As videos of the same go viral, social media has flooded the comments section with humorous comments. “Bhai, muskil se rahat mili thi traffic se, ab ye log alg traffic create kr rhe hain,” wrote a user. Another said, “Another source of entertainment.” “Kuch din bad food stalls bhi lagenge is flyover pe,” joked another.
While the flyover might offer a thrilling front-row seat to the skies, authorities warn that safety must come first and a selfie isn’t worth the risk.
