As life moves forward, people often set goals building a career, staying fit, or finding meaningful relationships. While staying busy can feel rewarding, understanding why you pursue certain goals plays
a far more important role in managing stress. When you are clear about your purpose, you stay motivated and are less likely to feel overwhelmed by everyday challenges. Knowing your “why” helps you focus on what truly matters, instead of stressing over small setbacks.
Dr Gauri Raut, Clinical Psychologist, Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, Mumbai, explains that one of the most effective ways to manage anxiety is practising self-compassion.
“Being kind to yourself can significantly reduce stress,” says Dr. Raut. “Instead of constantly fighting your own thoughts or being overly critical, learning to treat yourself with patience and understanding makes a noticeable difference.” She adds that self-awareness helps people recognise their efforts and appreciate how much they already do to move forward in life.
Dr Raut emphasises that stress often stems from unrealistic expectations and constant comparison. “Competing with others creates unnecessary pressure,” she notes. “A healthier approach is to compete with yourself, to focus on personal growth rather than measuring your success against someone else’s journey.”
Comparing yourself to others can intensify anxiety and lower self-esteem. Staying grounded in your own experiences and accepting yourself as you are allows for emotional stability and greater happiness. “Do not expect yourself to be someone you are not,” says Dr Raut. “Being authentic is key to long-term mental well-being.”
Excessive stress can leave people feeling emotionally drained and overwhelmed. While occasional stress is a part of life, constant anxiety can negatively affect mental health. “Learning to pause, relax, and show yourself kindness can improve your overall quality of life,” explains Dr. Raut.
She also stresses the importance of seeking help when stress becomes unmanageable. “If anxiety begins to interfere with daily functioning, reaching out for professional support is not a weakness, it’s a step toward healing,” she says.
By understanding your motivations, avoiding unnecessary comparisons, and practising self-kindness, it becomes easier to manage stress and lead a more balanced, fulfilling life.
