Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guwahati on Saturday as part of a two-day visit to Assam and was received at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International (LGBI) Airport by Chief Minister Himanta
Biswa Sarma.
A key highlight of the visit is the inauguration of the newly built terminal at LGBI Airport, developed at a cost of nearly Rs 4,000 crore.
Touted as India’s first nature-inspired airport terminal, the facility is expected to significantly enhance passenger capacity and strengthen Assam’s aviation infrastructure, while giving a boost to tourism and trade in the region.
Ahead of his visit, the Prime Minister had shared on social media that the new terminal would improve ease of travel and contribute to the state’s overall development.
He described the project as an important step towards modernising infrastructure in the Northeast.
After inaugurating the terminal, PM Modi is scheduled to spend a brief period inside the facility before unveiling an 80-foot statue of Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam’s first Chief Minister.
He will also address a public gathering near the airport, followed by a roadshow en route to the BJP’s state headquarters at Bashi.
During his visit, the Prime Minister will pay tribute to the martyrs of the 1979 Assam Movement at the newly constructed Swahid Smarak Kshetra, dedicated to the memory of 860 individuals who lost their lives during the agitation.
On Sunday, PM Modi will interact with 25 students from various schools under the ‘Pariksha pe Charcha’ initiative.
The interaction, scheduled to last around 30 minutes, will take place aboard the cruise vessel ‘Charaideo’ while sailing on the Brahmaputra river.
The Prime Minister will then travel to Dibrugarh and proceed to Namrup, where he will lay the foundation stone for a Rs 12,000 crore ammonia-urea fertiliser plant.
The project is expected to provide a major push to industrial growth and employment in Assam. PM Modi will also address a public meeting before concluding his two-day visit to the state.
