India Weather Update For Next 7 Days: India is staring at a dramatic weather split this week — some states may see very heavy rainfall, while others continue to battle a punishing heatwave. The India Meteorological
Department (IMD) says the shift is being driven by a western disturbance that could finally bring relief to parts of North India.
Rain To Break The Heat — But Not Everywhere
After days of relentless heat, there is cautious hope. The IMD expects rain and thunderstorms to kick in from April 28, especially across northwestern parts of the country. In some pockets, this could even intensify into heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds.
This system is likely to bring temperatures down, but the relief may feel patchy rather than widespread. Some regions could cool off quickly, while others may continue to simmer.

North India Still Scorching — For Now
Until that rain arrives, the heat isn’t letting up.
Large parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi remain firmly in the grip of a heatwave. Temperatures have been brushing the mid-40s, with places like Banda in Uttar Pradesh touching a blistering 46.6°C.
Delhi, too, is running hotter than usual, with warnings in place as daytime temperatures climb well above seasonal averages.
The IMD has cautioned that the next couple of days remain critical, with people advised to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours and avoid prolonged exposure.
A Country Running Hot — And Using More Power
The heat isn’t just uncomfortable — it’s pushing systems to their limit.
India’s power demand has surged to a record 256.11 GW, as households and offices ramp up cooling. This spike reflects just how widespread and intense the heat has become.
Heat Spreads Beyond The North
This isn’t just a North India story.
From Odisha’s industrial belt to Tamil Nadu’s coastal districts, temperatures are soaring past comfort levels. In Kerala, the IMD has flagged hot and humid conditions, where even slightly lower temperatures feel oppressive due to moisture in the air.
In hill states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand — typically seen as cooler escapes — the heat has been unusually sharp, forcing even school closures in some areas.
What This Means For You
The next few days could feel like a turning point — but not instantly.
Expect intense heat to continue briefly, followed by sudden bursts of rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in some regions. It’s a mix of extremes, where one part of the country waits for relief while another braces for heavy showers.
In short, India’s weather right now isn’t just hot or wet — it’s both, at the same time.
