Shakuntala Awaits, BKC
View this post on Instagram
A serendipitous encounter in a Mumbai bookstore sparks a modern retelling of an ancient love story, as Shakuntala and Dushyant, drawn from the Mahabharata, navigate the complexities of connection in a contemporary, globalized world. In Shakuntala Awaits, written and directed by Isheeta Ganguly, love unfolds across continents and within silences, questioning what it truly means to be seen and understood in today’s shifting landscape of identity and expectation.
When Dushyant returns to his academic life in Boston, leaving Shakuntala behind in Mumbai with a promise to return, she finds herself adrift in a tide of memory, familial pressures, and personal transformation. Her journey to reunite with him sets the stage for an encounter that defies simple resolution, propelling both into an emotional reckoning shaped by distance, longing, and the subtle ruptures that time can reveal.
Brought to life by Arjun Gupta and Prerna Talwar, the play moves seamlessly between cities and inner worlds, tracing the diasporic experience and the intimate negotiations of love and selfhood. Isheeta Ganguly, acclaimed for her unique fusion of contemporary feminism, mythology, history, and pop culture as seen in her internationally recognized musicals Three Women and Sundays with Chitra & Chaitali, crafts a drama-comedy that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Following its celebrated Off-Broadway run at HERE Theatre in New York, Shakuntala Awaits weaves layered storytelling and nuanced performance into an exploration of relationships defined as much by absence as by presence, reminding us that, sometimes, the battles we fight for love lead us back to ourselves.
