US President Donald Trump once again lavished praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the two leaders met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, highlighting what has long been one of the most
closely watched personal relationships in global politics.
The remarks echo comments Trump has made in recent months, where he described Modi as “calm”, “cool” and a “total killer” — a phrase he used to convey the Indian Prime Minister’s toughness and negotiating ability despite his soft-spoken public persona.
Trump has repeatedly spoken warmly of Modi, praising his leadership style and political longevity. Earlier this month, he congratulated Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving Prime Minister, describing him as a “strong, healthy and wise man” and predicting further success in the years ahead.
First Meeting In 16 Months
The interaction at the G7 Summit in Evian-les-Bains marked the first face-to-face meeting between Modi and Trump in more than 16 months. The two leaders exchanged greetings ahead of broader discussions expected to cover trade, energy cooperation and regional security issues.
The meeting comes at a sensitive moment in India-US relations, with both countries navigating differences over trade and recent tensions linked to developments in the Strait of Hormuz.
A Relationship Trump Frequently Highlights
Trump has often cited his rapport with Modi while discussing international leaders. Over the years, he has referenced large public events such as “Howdy Modi” in Houston and has repeatedly portrayed the Indian Prime Minister as a strong leader capable of making difficult decisions.
His description of Modi as a “total killer” has drawn attention because it contrasts with the Prime Minister’s calm public image. Trump has used the phrase to suggest that Modi is a formidable political operator and a tough negotiator behind the scenes.
Focus On Bilateral Issues
Beyond the personal chemistry between the two leaders, officials expect discussions to focus on a potential trade agreement, energy cooperation, visa issues and broader geopolitical developments. Trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington are continuing, with both sides expressing optimism about reaching an interim agreement in the coming weeks.
As the G7 Summit continues, the Modi-Trump interaction is likely to remain one of the most closely watched engagements, reflecting both the importance of India-US ties and the unusually personal diplomacy that has characterised relations between the two leaders.
