When it comes to “fearlessness and ambition”, producer and screenwriter Jonathan Nolan thinks Bollywood has an edge over Hollywood. Best known for creating shows like Person of Interest and Westworld,
the 49-year-old producer once again praised Indian cinema while speaking about its growing global influence. Jonathan, who garnered widespread attention after describing Bollywood as “bigger than” Hollywood back in 2024 during his visit to India, again reflected on what sets Indian films apart.
He was speaking at the Asia premiere of Fallout Season 2 in Tokyo, Japan, when Jonathan was reminded of his earlier remarks. He was then asked what gives Bollywood an edge over Hollywood, and he pointed out its creative spirit and scale.
Jonathan Nolan Thinks Bollywood Is More ‘Ambitious’
“I think it’s very clear, and you sort of started to see the global fascination with Indian filmmaking. It is fearless in those ways at its best. Hollywood can be, too. But (in India), there’s a level of ambition that is very exciting,” Jonathan said while speaking with Hindustan Times.
Despite his admiration and respect, the producer admitted that his demanding schedule leaves him with little time to explore Indian cinema as much as he would love to. He mentioned, “Unfortunately, given the schedule of making television means you often don’t have a lot of time to watch any television or film.” Jonathan shared that his current viewing habits at home are majorly influenced by what his children are watching.
Jonathan Nolan Promises To Watch More Indian Cinema During His Break
“The media diet in my house is still largely decided by my two lovely kids, who are still going through a Miyazaki phase. So there are a lot of Miyazaki films (in the house),” he explained. The Fallout director further promised that he would be catching up on more Indian films once he finally gets a break from his schedule.
Currently, Jonathan is focused more on the new season of Fallout, which premieres on Prime Video today, December 17. Fallout, which is based on a video game created by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky. The new season will see the return of the core cast, including Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Moises Arias, Zelia Mendes-Jones, and Walton Goggins. After the premiere, the subsequent episodes of the new season will be released weekly until February 4, 2026.
