In a post on X, the White House wrote, “President Donald J. Move To Safeguard US Economy, Says White House
The move is aimed at safeguarding US national security, advancing foreign policy objectives, and protecting the American economy, the post stated.
The order could impose a 25 per cent tariff on nations that maintain business ties with Iran, news agency Reuters reported. This development comes amid ongoing tensions between the two countries even as talks were held this week.
The order authorises the United States to levy additional tariffs on imports from countries that directly or indirectly engage in trade with Iran. It also empowers the Secretary of State, Secretary of Commerce, and the US Trade Representative to issue rules and guidance to implement the tariff regime, and allows the US President to adjust the policy in response to retaliation or if nations take steps to align with US security and economic objectives, it said in a press release.
US Calls Iran ‘World’s Leading State Sponsor Of Terrorism’
The press release mentioned the order reaffirms an ongoing national emergency with respect to threats posed by Iran, including its pursuit of nuclear capabilities, support for terrorism, ballistic missile development and regional destabilisation. The statement described Iran as the world’s “leading state sponsor of terrorism.”
“Iran — the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism — supports proxy terrorist groups and militias across the Middle East, including those who have killed and wounded Americans and are actively targeting U.S. forces, regional partners, and allies,” the release further stated.
The US administration emphasised that the measure builds on Trump’s long-standing stance against Iran’s nuclear ambitions and “malign influence abroad”, highlighting actions taken in his prior term, such as withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal and designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization. Recent US military operations and diplomatic pressure were also cited as part of efforts to push Tehran toward negotiating a deal with no nuclear weapons, the statement said.
