Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the Dussehra celebrations at IP Extension in Delhi on Tuesday, with preparations under way for the annual event. Organisers are currently finalising arrangements
ahead of the programme, which is expected to draw a large gathering.
The celebrations will mark the festival of Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, which symbolises the victory of good over evil. The festival is traditionally observed through Ramlila performances and the burning of effigies of Ravana, along with those of Meghnad and Kumbhakarna, in many parts of the country.
Preparations Under Way For Dussehra Event
Arrangements for the programme at IP Extension are being finalised ahead of the Prime Minister’s expected participation. Organisers are working on the preparations for the event.
The annual celebrations are part of the city’s Dussehra festivities, during which residents gather at public grounds to watch cultural performances and participate in religious events. The festival is marked by large gatherings in several parts of Delhi, with organisers making arrangements for visitors.
Why Is Dussehra Celebrated?
Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, is an important Hindu festival that represents the triumph of good over evil. According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama defeated Ravana, the king of Lanka, to rescue Sita. The occasion is commemorated through Ramlila performances that depict key episodes from the epic, culminating in the battle between Rama and Ravana.
In many parts of North India, the festival concludes with the burning of large effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakarna. The ritual represents the destruction of evil and the importance of truth, righteousness and courage.
Dussehra also carries religious significance in other parts of India, where it is associated with Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura. While traditions vary across regions, the central message of the festival remains the victory of good over evil.
Dussehra Celebrations Across Delhi
Delhi hosts Dussehra events at several grounds every year, featuring Ramlila performances, cultural programmes and the symbolic burning of Ravana’s effigy. These celebrations bring together families and local communities and are an important part of the capital’s festive calendar.
Further details about Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the IP Extension event are awaited as preparations continue.
