The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Tuesday summoned Meta’s global head of public policy after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook video on examination paper leaks was
briefly removed from Facebook.
The ministry sought an explanation from the social media platform over the removal of the Prime Minister’s video, prompting the summons to Meta’s global public policy head.
The development comes days after the Prime Minister shared the video on July 23 as part of his outreach to the country’s youth amid the student protests organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination.
In the address, Prime Minister Modi assured students that the Centre would take stringent action against examination paper leaks and strengthen the legal framework to deal with those responsible.
He said departments had been directed to facilitate the setting up of Fast-Track Courts and announced that a draft law proposing stricter punishment for paper leak offences would be placed before the Union Cabinet before being introduced in Parliament.
The video was briefly unavailable on Facebook before being restored.
META SAYS REMOVAL WAS A TECHNICAL ERROR
Following the controversy, Meta acknowledged that the video had been removed inadvertently and apologised, attributing the incident to a technical error.
“The content was removed in error and has since been restored,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.
The company did not elaborate on the nature of the technical issue that led to the temporary removal of the Prime Minister’s post.
The video also highlighted the government’s efforts to ensure that the academic year of nearly 22 lakh students remained unaffected despite the examination controversy, with the Prime Minister reiterating that the future and welfare of the country’s youth remained a top priority.
