A cold wave is set to continue across large parts of North India, with temperatures expected to dip further on Sunday morning.
While no major synoptic change is expected on January 11, severe cold conditions
are likely to persist, keeping minimum temperatures below normal in several regions. Cold wave and cold day conditions are expected in pockets of Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, particularly during the early morning hours.
States such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh are likely to record lower-than-usual minimum temperatures at many places. Cities including Ranchi, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur and Rewa, along with Jaipur, Ajmer, Jaisalmer and Bikaner, are expected to remain unusually cold. Similar conditions are likely to prevail across Punjab and Haryana, while Delhi is also expected to witness a chilly start to the day.
Fog conditions, however, are expected to be limited. Dense fog may occur only in isolated areas of Punjab and northeastern Rajasthan, including Bharatpur, Kota, Sawai Madhopur and Alwar. Parts of Madhya Pradesh, such as Gwalior and Guna, could also see patches of fog. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are likely to see relief from fog, and any fog formation is expected to be short-lived.
Meanwhile, southern India is set to witness a different weather pattern due to a system over the Bay of Bengal moving westward across the southern peninsula towards the Arabian Sea. As a result, coastal Tamil Nadu may receive spells of moderate to heavy rainfall.
Cloudy conditions are expected over interior Tamil Nadu, Kerala and south interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru and nearby areas. Kerala’s major cities, such as Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, are also likely to remain under cloud cover.
Clouds may extend to Rayalaseema in south Andhra Pradesh, north interior Karnataka and parts of southern Maharashtra, including Pune, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, Solapur, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad and Goa. Isolated and patchy rainfall cannot be ruled out over southern coastal Maharashtra, south-central Maharashtra and north interior Karnataka. Parts of Telangana, Odisha, north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh may also see light cloud cover.
Overall, North India is bracing for another cold morning on Sunday, while southern states are expected to see cloudy skies and scattered rainfall.
