The Western Railway (WR) soon plans to reserve a compartment for senior citizens on local trains. The compartment, which was earlier reserved for luggage, will now be the special coach for the elderly.
This change will be introduced gradually in 105 non-AC local trains of Western Railway. Currently, WR’s electric multiple unit (EMU) suburban trains have 14 seats for senior citizens, seven per side in the third and 12th coaches from the Churchgate side, which are not enough for the number of travellers.
Where will it be?
According to officials, in trains heading towards Churchgate station, this special compartment will be at the sixth position, making it easier for senior citizens to find it.
What will be the compartment’s layout?
The design of this special compartment has been made keeping passenger safety and convenience in mind. It will have three 3-seater benches and two 2-seater units, with a total seating capacity of 13 passengers. Additionally, more than 50 passengers can stand in this compartment.
Special safety arrangements
For safety, special arrangements have been made in this compartment. Emergency ladders have been provided under the frames of both doors inside the compartment, which can be used by passengers in any emergency situation.
Senior citizens who travel during rush hours often find it difficult to board, get off, and travel safely in local trains.
With this initiative, senior citizens will be able to travel more safely, easily, and comfortably.
What HC had said
According to the details, the Bombay High Court, in its order, which was issued last year, said that Indian Railways must allow seniors to travel in the luggage compartments of local trains with a dedicated compartment for senior citizens.
With over 50,000 older people travelling daily on local trains in Mumbai, a public interest litigation (PIL) had highlighted their plight and sought special compartments for them.
