A total of 20 teams will compete against each other to win the 2026 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup . The matches of the shortest-format megaevent this year will be played across five venues in India
and three in Sri Lanka. Many star batters and bowlers will feature in the T20 World Cup 2026, and there will be high expectations from them, especially from the players of countries like India, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and England.
Keeping in mind the current form their players both with bat and ball, it will be a surprise if they fail to rewrite history books in the upcoming tournament.
Here’s a look the major records that can be broken during T20 World Cup 2026:
Highest Team Total
The record of highest team total in a T20 World Cup match is held by Sri Lanka. In their 2007 T20 World Cup Group C match played against Kenya in Johannesburg on September 14, Sri Lanka posted a total of 260/6 in 20 overs. This record has stood for 19 years but there’s a very high possibility that this year at least one team will score go past this tally.
Most Wins In One Edition
India won the T20 World Cup title win in 2024 with a 100% win record. Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, the Men in Blue won all eight matches, which is a record for most wins in one edition of the T20 World Cup. But this time, India, or any of the other 19 participating teams, can go one step further and win all nine matches to set a new world record.
Most Runs
Virat Kohli holds the record for scoring most runs in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. In 35 matches for India, he scored 1292 runs. England’s Jos Buttler has 1013 runs to his credit, and if he manages to score 280 runs in the upcoming tournament, then he will go past Kohli’s tally and take the No. 1 position.
Highest Individual Score
The record of the highest individual score in T20 World Cup history is in the name of Brendon McCullum. During the New Zealand-Bangladesh 2012 T20 World Cup match played in Pallekele on September 21, McCullum scored 123 runs from 58 balls. So far, 10 batters have managed to score centuries in the T20 World Cup, but no one has gone past McCullum’s tally in the last 16 years. This time, keeping the conditions in mind, McCullum’s record is in danger.
Most Runs In One Edition
The record for scoring the most runs in one edition of a T20 World Cup is 319, which is held by Virat Kohli. But since a player can play a maximum of nine matches in the 2026 edition, there is a high possibility of someone going past the 319-run mark and rewriting history books.
Most Sixes In One Edition
Nicholas Pooran hammered 17 sixes for the West Indies in the 2024 T20 World Cup, which helped him break the record of hitting the most sixes in one edition of the men’s shortest format mega-event. In 2026, this will be another record that many players, like Abhishek Sharma, Phil Salt, Quinton de Kock, Tim David, Hardik Pandya, and Finn Allen, among others, would like to break.
Most Wickets
Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, Australia’s Adam Zampa, and South Africa’s Anrich Nortje are 14, 14, 15, and 16 wickets, respectively, away from breaking Shakib Al Hasan’s record and becoming the highest wicket-taker in men’s T20 World Cup history. Shakib dismissed 50 batters in 43 T20 World Cup matches for Bangladesh from 2007 to 2024.
Most Dismissals
MS Dhoni completed 32 dismissals as wicketkeeper for India in 33 T20 World Cup matches, and South Africa’s Quinton de Kock has 30 dismissals to his credit behind the wickets. He is almost certain to go past Dhoni’s tally this time around.
Most Catches (As Fielder)
If Glenn Maxwell manages to take at least three catches in the T20 World Cup 2026 for Australia then he will break David Warner’s record of 25 catches and become the most successful out-fielder in the competition’s history.
Most wickets in T20Is
Legendary spinner and Afghanistan’s T20I captain Rashid Khan has 187 wickets to his credit in 111 T20I matches played so far. He needs 13 more wickets to become the first bowler in the world to complete double century of wickets in the 20-over format of the game. Also, if Rashid manages to take four wickets, then he will take his tally of wickets to 700 in T20s.
