The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across large parts of the country as the southwest monsoon gathers pace, issuing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall alerts for 23
states over the next 24 to 72 hours. The weather agency has also predicted a significant improvement in weather conditions across north India, including Delhi-NCR, as monsoon activity intensifies.
Monsoon Advances Further Across India
According to the IMD, the northern limit of the monsoon has now extended across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and up to the Nepal border. Conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further over the next two days into large parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
The weather department also said a fresh western disturbance is expected to become active from July 2, leading to increased rainfall over northwest India.
Heavy To Very Heavy Rainfall Forecast
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday in:
- Assam and Meghalaya Sub-Himalayan
- West Bengal and Sikkim
- Bihar
- Konkan and Goa
- Madhya Maharashtra
- Coastal Karnataka
- Kerala
Heavy rainfall is also likely in:
- Arunachal Pradesh
- Nagaland
- Manipur
- Mizoram
- Tripura
- Jharkhand
- Odisha
- Uttar Pradesh
- Uttarakhand
- Madhya Pradesh
- Chhattisgarh
- Vidarbha
- Telangana
- Tamil Nadu
- Puducherry
- Interior Karnataka
The department has warned of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and the possibility of localised waterlogging in several of these regions. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official weather advisories.
Delhi Set For Weather Relief
Delhi-NCR is expected to receive relief from persistent heat and humidity as rain activity increases over the coming days.
The IMD has predicted cloudy skies with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in parts of the national capital on June 30. Rainfall is expected to become more widespread between July 1 and July 4, with maximum temperatures likely to fall by 5°C to 6°C.
However, isolated heatwave conditions may continue in parts of Delhi through June 30 before the weather changes significantly.
Uttar Pradesh To See Active Monsoon
The IMD said monsoon activity will become fully active across Uttar Pradesh.
Eastern Uttar Pradesh is expected to receive widespread rainfall from June 30 to July 3, with heavy rain forecast in several districts. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds of 40-60 km/h are also likely.
Western Uttar Pradesh is expected to witness widespread rainfall through July 2. While some eastern districts experienced heatwave conditions on June 29, temperatures are expected to decline as the monsoon strengthens.
Uttarakhand Faces Landslide Risk
Continuous rainfall is forecast across Uttarakhand between June 30 and July 5.
The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly in the hill districts, raising concerns over landslides, road blockages, flash floods and rising river levels.
Pilgrims undertaking the Char Dham Yatra have been advised to monitor weather updates before travelling.
Bihar, Jharkhand Under Rain Alert
Bihar is likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days, particularly across north and central districts. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms and lightning.
While the rainfall is expected to support Kharif sowing, authorities cautioned that waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruptions remain possible. People have also been advised to avoid open fields during lightning.
Jharkhand is expected to receive heavy rainfall on June 30 and July 1, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. A yellow alert has been issued for several districts, with authorities warning that river levels may rise, especially in mining and hilly regions.
Central, Western And Southern India To Receive Widespread Rain
The IMD said monsoon conditions will remain vigorous over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and Maharashtra during the coming days. Very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Madhya Pradesh between July 2 and July 4.
Heavy rainfall is also expected across Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch, particularly after July 3.
In southern India, rain is expected to continue over Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, with isolated places in Kerala and coastal Karnataka likely to experience very heavy rainfall.
Northeast To Continue Receiving Heavy Rain
Widespread rainfall is expected to persist across the northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, over the next several days, with heavy rainfall forecast at several locations.
Fishermen Advised To Stay Ashore
The IMD has warned of strong winds over parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until July 3.
The advisory covers coastal areas along Konkan-Goa, Kerala, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, the Andaman Sea and several parts of the Bay of Bengal.
