Amid a yellow alert, Mumbai woke up to rain for the third consecutive day on Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Skymet have predicted the official onset of the delayed southwest monsoon
over the city today. Severe morning downpours led to local waterlogging and minor traffic delays, particularly across the South Mumbai area. According to reports, the announcement on monsoon arrival is likely today. The city is currently experiencing steady rainfall with temperatures hovering around 27°C and high humidity at 90%. Continuous rain is anticipated over the next few days as the monsoon active line solidifies across the Konkan coast.

Rain on Tuesday
Between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, South Mumbai bore the brunt of the heavy rain. The BMC Headquarters recorded 45 mm of rainfall, while Malvani (Malad) recorded 32 mm, and Colaba Pumping Station logged 29 mm.
Pre-monsoon showers triggered localized waterlogging. High peak intensity was recorded over the Bandra-Worli Sea Link earlier this morning.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised citizens to remain cautious due to active thunderstorm warnings. Fishermen have also been warned to stay off the South Maharashtra coastline due to gusts up to 60 kmph.
The 2026 monsoon has faced an unusual month-long delay driven by El Niño conditions, leaving city reservoirs critically low. Today’s widespread showers signal a long-awaited weather transition to replenish the city’s water systems.

Mumbai monsoon delay
Mumbai’s southwest monsoon is delayed by approximately two weeks this year. While its normal arrival date is June 11, slow progression and weak moisture-laden winds stalled the monsoon’s advancement.
In both 2019 and 2023, the monsoon was stalled severely, with the IMD officially declaring the onset over Mumbai on June 25—a full two weeks behind schedule.
Historically, another major delayed onset was recorded in 2009, when the monsoon arrival was declared on June 21.
This year’s sluggish arrival is a sharp contrast to the previous year (2025), when the monsoon recorded its earliest arrival in 75 years, hitting the city on May 26.
