“We often blame low energy, sudden weight changes, mood swings, or persistent brain fog on stress and busy lifestyles,” says Ajay Shah, Chief of Lab, Neuberg Dr Ajay Shah Laboratory. “But in many cases,
these symptoms may actually point to an underlying thyroid imbalance.”
The thyroid gland, a small, butterfly-shaped organ located in the neck plays a critical role in regulating the body’s metabolism, energy production, and temperature control. “Despite its size, the thyroid influences almost every system in the body,” Dr Shah explains. “When it is not functioning optimally, the impact can be felt everywhere.”
According to Dr Shah, thyroid hormones determine how efficiently the body converts food into energy and how major organs such as the heart, brain, and digestive system function. “In simple terms, thyroid hormones control how smoothly the body’s engine runs,” he says.
When thyroid hormone levels fall too low, a condition known as hypothyroidism, or rise too high, referred to as hyperthyroidism, the body’s internal balance is disrupted. “One of the biggest challenges with thyroid disorders is that symptoms often develop very slowly and closely mimic other common conditions,” Dr Shah notes. “As a result, thyroid problems can go undetected for long periods.”
Fortunately, diagnosing thyroid disorders is relatively straightforward. “A simple blood test can provide valuable insight into thyroid function,” says Dr Shah. The most commonly performed test measures Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), which reflects how effectively the thyroid is responding to the body’s needs. “Abnormal TSH levels may indicate an overactive or underactive thyroid and signal the need for further evaluation,” he adds.
Additional tests such as Free T3 and Free T4 help assess the levels of active thyroid hormones circulating in the bloodstream. “In certain cases, testing for thyroid antibodies is also important, especially when an autoimmune condition is suspected,” Dr. Shah explains. “These tests help us pinpoint the exact cause of symptoms and guide appropriate treatment.”
Early detection plays a crucial role in managing thyroid disorders effectively. “When identified and treated at the right time, most patients experience significant improvements in energy levels, concentration, and overall well-being,” Dr. Shah says. “Regular monitoring also ensures that treatment remains effective over the long term.”
He emphasises that awareness and timely testing are key to maintaining hormonal balance. “Understanding your thyroid health and not ignoring persistent symptoms can make a meaningful difference,” Dr. Shah concludes. “Simple tests, done early, can help people regain vitality and protect their health for years to come.”
