Mirzapur The Movie has to be one of the most anticipated films of 2026, with the film bringing back all the OGs together one more time. Fans can’t keep calm. Ahead of the movie’s theatrical release in September,
Farhan Akhtar has opened up about what led to the birth of the Mirzapur world and why the team was prompted to make a movie out of the series.
Speaking at the trailer launch of the film, Farhan Akhtar spoke about how he used to get questioned about the series wherever he went after its premiere in 2018. “The show is a result of fans’ love. They have supported the show from the time it was first released. Amazon took it across the world. Wherever I went, people used to ask me when ‘Mirzapur’ was coming,” the actor-director said.
While crediting fans’ love behind the decision to bring the world of Mirzapur to theatres, Akhtar added, “So it is really the fans that have demanded this movie. We are very happy and grateful to have put it together with the original cast and the amazing new cast.”
How Mirzapur Became A Show?
“When Puneet came to us for the first time, our first instinct was to refer him to a brain doctor,” Akhtar joked while sharing how the first pitch of the series went, and continued, “Then we thought of making it into a show so that people can get into it.”
While calling Krishna and director Gurmmeet Singh “the heroes of the show,” he credited them for shaping the world of ‘Mirzapur’.

The trailer, released on Tuesday, August 11, promises another intense battle for the coveted Mirzapur ki gaddi. Pankaj Tripathi’s Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal’s Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu’s Munna Bhaiya return to the centre of the action.
Mirzapur The Movie Cast: Who Stars In The Film?
The film brings back a host of familiar faces while introducing new characters to the world of Mirzapur. While Pankaj Tripathi reprises his role as Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal returns as Guddu Pandit. Divyenndu is back as Munna Tripathi, one of the most popular characters from the franchise. The film will also star Rasika Dugal as Beena Tripathi, Shweta Tripathi Sharma as Golu Gupta, Shriya Pilgaonkar as Sweety Gupta and Abhishek Banerjee as Compounder. Among the new additions are Ravi Kishan and Jitendra Kumar.
Unlike the original Mirzapur series, which premiered on Prime Video, Mirzapur The Movie is getting a theatrical release. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas across India on September 4, 2026.
