Prime Minister Modi was received at Paro Airport by his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay, who posted on X: “I join the entire nation in welcoming my elder brother Prime Minister @narendramodi to Bhutan.”
During the visit, Modi will hold talks with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tobgay, and the two sides will jointly inaugurate the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project, a major bilateral initiative.
The Prime Minister will also meet the fourth King and attend celebrations marking his 70th birthday.
In a statement ahead of his visit, Modi said he was confident the trip would “further deepen our bonds of friendship and strengthen our efforts towards shared progress and prosperity.”
“It would be my honour to join the people of Bhutan as they mark the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King,” Modi said, adding that India and Bhutan’s partnership stands as a model of trust and goodwill under the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
