A Special 26-style incident was reported in Delhi’s Rohini area after a group of men allegedly posing as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers attempted to conduct a fake raid at a businessman’s
residence before leaving the spot when his wife demanded proof of their identity and a valid search warrant, officials said.
According to the family’s complaint, around eight to 10 people reached the house claiming to be CBI officials and said they had come to search.
The businessman’s wife was at home and refused to open the gate. She asked the men to establish their identities and show a valid search warrant before allowing them inside.
The complainant alleged that the group pressured her to let them enter and threatened her when she refused. However, she continued to demand proof of their identities and the required documents.
The alleged CBI team remained outside the residence for nearly 90 minutes, raising further suspicion.
CCTV cameras in the area recorded the group’s movements. Investigators are examining the footage to establish the number of people involved and identify the vehicle they used, officials said.
As the men continued to remain outside, residents also gathered at the spot and questioned them. They demanded that the group produce their identity documents, a search warrant or a copy of the notice authorising the alleged raid.
The group reportedly claimed that the documents were inside their vehicle. When asked to bring them, the men left the location saying they would get the papers but never returned.
The family subsequently contacted the police through the emergency helpline 112. A police team reached the residence and recorded the complainant’s statement.
The complainant further alleged that the suspects were wearing clothes bearing CBI insignia and carrying identity cards identifying them as CBI officials, apparently to make the operation appear legitimate.
The incident took another turn when the complainant’s father later received a WhatsApp notice that purportedly carried the name and signature of the CBI director, according to the complaint.
Although the message was later deleted, the family had taken a screenshot and handed it over to the police along with the complaint.
The family alleged that the notice was forged and intended to make the purported raid appear to be an authorised CBI operation.
Officials said the police are verifying the authenticity of the notice, while the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
