The festive season brings with it the joy of family gatherings, dazzling lights, and a spread of irresistible delicacies. From rich laddoos and creamy barfis to crispy namak paras and spicy chaats, celebrations
often feel incomplete without indulgence. But while your taste buds may rejoice, your skin might not share the same enthusiasm.
“High sugar, excess salt, fried foods, and disrupted routines during festivals can significantly impact skin health,” says Dr. Ameesha Mahajan, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Founder, Eden Skin Clinic. “The changes may not be immediate, but they can trigger acne flare-ups, dullness, puffiness, and even worsen chronic skin conditions. Mindful indulgence is key to enjoying the season without sacrificing your skin’s glow,” she adds.
Dr Mahajan explains how festive binging can impact your skin and how to take care of it.
1. Sugar Spikes Trigger Acne
Festive sweets like laddoos, chocolates, and halwas cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, which in turn increase insulin. This hormonal surge boosts sebum production, clogging pores and leading to acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. Even those with clear skin may see new breakouts after heavy sugar intake.
2. Salty Snacks Dehydrate the Skin
Namkeens, chips, and deep-fried savouries are often loaded with salt. Excess sodium pulls water out of skin cells, leaving skin dull, dry, and prone to fine lines. It can also cause puffiness, especially around the eyes, due to water retention.
3. Fried Foods Fuel Inflammation
Trans fats and refined oils in festive fried treats can promote inflammation, aggravating skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, and acne. Inflammation also slows down skin healing, making existing blemishes linger longer.
4. Late Nights Disrupt Skin Recovery
Irregular sleep and skipping your skincare routine after late-night celebrations raise cortisol levels, increasing oil production and slowing the skin’s repair cycle.
5. Sugary Drinks Sap the Glow
Alcohol, sweetened beverages, and excess caffeine dehydrate the skin and widen blood vessels, worsening redness in sensitive skin types.
How to Indulge Without Regret
- Follow the 80-20 rule: keep 80% of meals wholesome and limit indulgences to 20%.
- Drink plenty of fluids to flush out excess salt and sugar.
- Pair sweets with fresh fruit or salad to add fibre and antioxidants.
- Always remove makeup before bed and moisturise well.
- Prioritise 7–8 hours of quality sleep to keep skin healthy.
