For years, sunscreen in India was often treated as an occasional summer essential, applied during beach holidays or outdoor activities and largely ignored during everyday routines. Today, however, that
mindset is changing rapidly. Growing awareness around skin health, environmental exposure, and long-term skincare benefits is transforming sun protection into a daily ritual rather than a seasonal step.
From lightweight formulations to multifunctional products that combine hydration, pollution protection, and makeup compatibility, Indian consumers are becoming far more discerning about what they apply to their skin.
According to Harmeet Singh, Chief Brand Officer, Asia South, The Body Shop, the conversation around sunscreen has evolved beyond simply checking the SPF number.
“Protection from UV rays is not just about applying any sunscreen but about choosing the right one for your skin type,” explains Singh. “Indian consumers are becoming more conscious about the cumulative impact of daily sun exposure. They are looking beyond just SPF numbers and considering how formulas interact with their skin over time.”
This shift is reflected in the growing preference for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulations that protect the skin without clogging pores or causing irritation. Consumers are increasingly seeking sunscreens that offer protection against both UV radiation and environmental pollutants, especially in urban environments where pollution and sun exposure often go hand in hand.
Singh also notes that sun care is no longer limited to outdoor activities.
“Consumers are now planning their sun care routines around their everyday lifestyles rather than only outdoor exposure,” says Singh. “There is growing awareness about the importance of consistent, year-round SPF use.”
As a result, multifunctional products are gaining popularity. Many consumers now prefer formulations that combine sun protection with hydration, anti-pollution benefits, and makeup-friendly textures, making sunscreen easier to incorporate into daily skincare routines.
While skincare awareness is driving this change, lifestyle trends and social media are also playing a role in reshaping sun protection habits.
According to Mohit Goyal, co-founder and director, Swiss Beauty, consumers are increasingly approaching sun care with intention and consistency.
“Indian consumers are evolving rapidly in their approach to sun care, moving from occasional use to a daily, mindful ritual,” says Goyal. “Influenced by social trends and lifestyle inspiration, they now seek products that combine broad-spectrum protection with lightweight, nourishing, and non-sticky formulas.”
Convenience and innovation are also becoming key drivers of product choice. Consumers are exploring new formats that make reapplication easier throughout the day, including mist-based sunscreens and portable solutions designed for on-the-go lifestyles.
“Innovations like sunscreen air mists make sun care effortless and enjoyable,” adds Goyal. “They allow the skin to stay fresh, radiant, and naturally glowing.”
The evolving demand signals a broader shift in how Indians view skincare. Rather than treating sunscreen purely as protection from sunburn, consumers are increasingly seeing it as an essential part of long-term skin health and prevention.
Today, sun protection represents more than just defence against UV rays. It reflects a growing emphasis on preventive skincare, everyday wellness, and maintaining healthy, radiant skin over time.
As awareness continues to grow, sun care in India is gradually transforming into a year-round habit, one that blends science, convenience, and lifestyle-driven skincare choices.
