Mumbai Coastal Road’s Worli Promenade: Mumbai has got its 5.25-km promenade along the Mumbai Coastal Road between Marine Lines and Worli on Independence Day. This is the first new major seafront public
space in South Mumbai since the development of the Marine Drive promenade in the 1930s. There is also another good news: the Mumbai Coastal Road, which was first inaugurated in March 2024, will now be open round the clock from August 15, instead of currently from 7 am to midnight.

The promenade developed by the BMC as part of its ambitious Mumbai Coastal Road Project was dedicated to the nation by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday. Fadnavis inaugurated the promenade, along with four pedestrian underpasses, on August 14 through a video link from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) new administrative headquarters in Bandra (East), according to a BMC release.
The seafront stretch includes green spaces, ornamental and native coastal vegetation, and has been developed as an eco-conscious recreational zone.

How to access coastal road’s new Worli promenade? Is it free?
The access of the new promenade will be free, and citizens can reach there through new underpasses at four locations:
- Bhulabhai Desai Road
- Haji Ali Junction
- Worli Dairy
- Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk near Worli seaface.
All underpasses include stairways and ramps to ensure accessibility for cyclists and persons with disabilities. Wheelchair access and inclusive design features have also been incorporated throughout the promenade.
Which was Mumbai’s first promenade?
The more than 3.5-km-long Marine Drive promenade, also known as Queen’s Necklace, stretches between Nariman Point and Girgaon Chowpatty in south Mumbai. It is one of the major tourist attractions.
What else does the coastal road promenade have?
The 20-metre-wide, sea-facing walkway will boost public access and walkability along the city’s western coastline.
It has:
- 20 underpasses spaced every 400 metres, enabling smooth and safe access between the seafront and the inland side of the road.
- The 17-hectare public space will have a five-hectare central median being developed by Tata Sons and a 12-hectare promenade developed by the BMC.
- This project is part of a larger visionto create nearly 70 hectares of open space along the coastal road.
- Approximately 70% of the new space features green landscaping, while the remaining 30% will include paved walkways, cycle tracks and public seating areas.
