For years, one complaint has united Bengaluru travellers: getting to the airport can feel like a journey in itself. Now, that could finally change. Bengaluru’s long-discussed second international airport appears
to be moving closer to reality, with the Kanakapura Road corridor in south Bengaluru emerging as the frontrunner for the new project.
According to News18 Kannada reports, Chudahalli and Somanahalli—two locations along the city’s southern belt—are currently leading the race, though the final site is yet to be confirmed. So, what could this mean for you as a traveller—and for the city?
Why Bengaluru Needs A Second Airport
Today, Kempegowda International Airport is Bengaluru’s only commercial airport, and it is under pressure. The airport handles millions of passengers every year and continues to see rising demand.
Located in Devanahalli, around 35 km north of the city, it often means long and unpredictable commutes, especially for people living in the south and west Bengaluru.
With air traffic steadily growing, experts say a second airport is becoming less of an option and more of a necessity.
What Changes If The New Airport Comes Up In South Bengaluru
The biggest and most immediate change would be shorter travel times. For residents living in areas such as JP Nagar, Jayanagar, Banashankari, Electronic City, and along Kanakapura Road, a southern airport could cut commute times dramatically—potentially saving one to two hours per trip.
It would also reduce the burden on Kempegowda Airport. With passenger traffic split between two airports, travellers could eventually experience shorter queues, less crowded terminals, and fewer delays caused by slot congestion.
A second airport would also improve regional connectivity. Southern Karnataka and nearby districts could benefit from better access to domestic and international flights, making travel more efficient for a much wider population.
Beyond travel, the project could reshape the city’s growth. Airport-led development often triggers major infrastructure upgrades—from new roads and metro links to hotels, offices, and residential hubs. If the airport is built near Kanakapura Road, the entire southern corridor could see a significant real estate and business boom.
What Travellers Can Expect
The project is still in its feasibility and site-selection phase. Authorities are studying factors such as land availability, environmental impact, airspace limitations, and connectivity costs before taking a final call.
There is also a long-standing concession agreement linked to Bengaluru’s existing airport, which could influence the pace and timeline of approvals.
If approved, Bengaluru’s second airport could fundamentally change how the city travels. It promises shorter commutes, better connectivity, reduced airport stress, and infrastructure growth in parts of the city that have long needed it.
For now, it remains a proposal—but for millions of Bengaluru residents, it could be the travel upgrade they’ve been waiting for.
