Oracle has reportedly revoked placement offers made to students across Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs), according to a Business Today report citing social
media posts by students.
Last month, tech giant Oracle reportedly laid off more than 30,000 employees globally, including around 12,000 employees in India.
An NIT student, Aditya Kumar Barawal, shared his experience on LinkedIn, stating that his pre-placement offer (PPO) from Oracle was withdrawn due to internal restructuring and changes in hiring capacity or employee headcount.
“While this setback has been difficult, I’m staying optimistic and focused on learning, building, and moving forward,” Barawal wrote in his post on the professional networking platform.
The student also shared a screenshot of an official communication issued by the institute regarding the development. The letter stated, “The recruiting (Oracle) organisation has recently withdrawn the offers extended to these candidates at no fault of their part.”
“Given that this development has occurred at a stage when the institutional placement cycle is nearing closure,” the letter added.
According to the post, three students, including Barawal, were impacted by the decision at the NIT. Since campus placement drives are already nearing completion, the affected candidates are now under pressure to secure alternative jobs in a difficult hiring environment.
Oracle move impacts IIT students too
Alongside NITs, Oracle has allegedly revoked placement offers made to students from several IITs as well. According to a Reddit post shared by r/Btechtards, nearly 50 students across IITs have been impacted by the move.
The post claimed that four placement offers from IIT Hyderabad were cancelled, while similar cases were reported from IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur and other institutes.
The issue has become more concerning due to the “one student, one offer” policy followed by many IITs. Under this rule, students who accept an offer from one company are generally barred from applying to other recruiters during the placement season.
Now, with Oracle reportedly withdrawing the offers, many students have been left without jobs after missing opportunities with other major recruiters.
The Reddit post also highlighted the emotional stress faced by students after months of preparation for placements and securing offers.
“Just imagine the kind of pressure these students would have gone through during the months preceding placement season, and the amount of satisfaction after their offer. Now, after their BTech/MTech is done, they suddenly get this news. They’ve missed all major companies and need to settle for much lower offers than they deserve, or worse yet, no offers,” the post said.
