There is plenty of cricketing history in Saif’s family. While Saif carved out a massively successful career in Hindi cinema, he is the direct descendant of two of the most iconic figures in Indian cricket history. His father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, was one of India’s most respected cricketers, while his grandfather, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi also captained the Indian cricket team in 1946 and played Test cricket for England in 1932 and 1934.
Saif’s son Taimur Ali Khan has also shown an interest in the sport. During an earlier visit to London, Taimur attended a cricket coaching session at the indoor nets at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
The session was conducted by the ICM Cricket Academy and led by former England cricketer Usman Afzaal. Saif was also present and spoke to Taimur about the family’s cricketing background.
He explained the connection between the Pataudi family and county cricket, telling Taimur about his great-grandfather’s association with Worcestershire and his grandfather’s time with Sussex.
“Counties are like clubs, such as Sussex and Worcestershire. Your great-grandfather played for Worcestershire, and your grandfather captained Sussex,” he told Taimur.
Saif Ali Khan On Why He Chose Bollywood Over Cricket
In 2024, Saif Ali Khan opened up about his early career choices, revealing that cricket was never a good fit for him mentally. While speaking on The Great Indian Kapil Show, he said, “People used to say I inherited my cricketing ability from my mother; it came genetically from the Tagore family. I didn’t have the mental focus that was needed, so cricket didn’t suit me that way. I think I chose the right profession; I enjoy this.”
