After months of anticipation following its theatrical run, Sitaare Zameen Par is finally set to arrive on a streaming platform. The sports drama starring Aamir Khan will soon premiere on SonyLIV, marking
a significant moment as the first Hindi film to debut directly on the streaming service.
Directed by RS Prasanna, the film released in theatres earlier and has taken nearly nine months to make its OTT debut. The movie is widely regarded as a spiritual successor to Aamir’s acclaimed 2007 film Taare Zameen Par, once again exploring themes of empathy, individuality and seeing the world from a different perspective.
Interestingly, during the film’s theatrical release, Aamir had initially stated that it would not arrive on OTT platforms. Instead, the movie was later made available on YouTube through a pay-per-view model for audiences in India and several international markets.
SonyLIV Announces Streaming Premiere
The announcement of the film’s OTT release was made through SonyLIV’s official Instagram page, where the platform shared the trailer along with details about the upcoming premiere.
The film follows the journey of Gulshan Arora, a once-successful basketball coach played by Aamir Khan. After a professional setback, he is sentenced to community service and tasked with training a team of young basketball players with disabilities.
Initially reluctant about the responsibility, Gulshan gradually forms a deep bond with the players and begins to understand their unique perspectives and strengths. As the team prepares for an important tournament, the coach realises that the players have as much to teach him about life as he does about basketball.
The film also features performances by Genelia Deshmukh, Ashish Pendse, Aroush Datta, Aayush Bhansali, Rishi Shahani, Gopikrishnan K Varma, Rishabh Jain, Vedant Sharma, Simran Mangeshkar, Samvit Desai and Naman Misra.
The project is produced by Aamir Khan Productions along with Aparna Purohit, while B. Shrinivas Rao and Ravi Bhagchandka also serve as producers. The screenplay is written by Divy Nidhi Sharma.
A Film Years In The Making
Director RS Prasanna, known for films such as Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and Kalyana Samayal Saadham, reportedly spent nearly three years developing and completing the project with Aamir Khan.
The film is also an official remake of the acclaimed Spanish movie Champions, which follows a similar story about a disgraced coach leading a team of players with intellectual disabilities.
Made on a reported budget of Rs 122 crore, Sitaare Zameen Par performed strongly at the box office, earning more than Rs 266.49 crore worldwide. The film went on to become Aamir Khan’s highest-grossing project since Dangal (2016).
During the promotional campaign, Aamir had strongly encouraged audiences to watch the movie in theatres and spoke against piracy. Later, the film became available on YouTube starting August 1, 2025, for Rs 100 in India, with region-specific pricing in countries such as the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Spain.
