Amaravati, Aug 5 (PTI) The IMD on Wednesday forecast thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds and isolated heavy rainfall across Andhra Pradesh in the coming days due to cyclonic circulations over the Bay
of Bengal and south peninsular India.
According to the India Meteorological Department, thunderstorms with lightning are likely at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from August 5 to 9. Strong surface winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph are also likely at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema during the same period.
“Thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds is likely at isolated places over Andhra Pradesh during the next five days,” the IMD said in a press release.
On August 6 and 7, thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds are likely to continue over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, the weather agency said.
On August 8 and 9, thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema, while isolated heavy rainfall is likely over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.
The IMD said isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on August 10, while no weather warning has been issued for August 11.
The weather agency said an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over the southeast Bay of Bengal at 3.1 km to 4.5 km above mean sea level.
Another circulation lies over South Interior Karnataka and adjoining areas at 5.8 km above mean sea level, while lower tropospheric southwesterly and westerly winds continue over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority said Srikakulam, Polavaram, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Nellore and Tirupati districts are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning at isolated places on Thursday.
Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Markapuram, Prakasam, Kurnool, Nandyal, Annamayya and Chittoor districts are likely to receive light rainfall at one or two places, it said.
The APSDMA advised people to avoid standing near trees, electric poles or hoardings during thunderstorms. PTI MS SSK
