As war-linked instability in West Asia rattles global energy markets and Europe looks for new economic partners, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a high-stakes five-nation tour that is as much
about geopolitics as it is about protecting India’s economy.
The trip, covering the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, comes at a moment when crude oil prices have surged, supply chains remain fragile and countries are redrawing strategic alliances around energy, technology and trade. Officials quoted by The Economic Times say the visit is aimed at deepening partnerships in areas ranging from oil and LNG to semiconductors, AI, green hydrogen and defence manufacturing.
UAE Stopover Is All About Energy Security
The most urgent leg of the trip is arguably the first one. PM Modi’s stop in the UAE comes amid rising global oil prices and fears of supply disruption linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis.
According to Reuters, India is expected to push for stable long-term crude and LNG supplies, while also exploring expansion of strategic petroleum reserves with Abu Dhabi’s support. The UAE is already among India’s top energy partners and discussions are also expected around defence ties and investments.
Europe Visit Linked to India-EU Trade Push
A major backdrop to the trip is the recently concluded India-EU trade agreement, which both sides now want to operationalise quickly.
The Centre sees Europe as a critical export market and investment source at a time when global trade flows are shifting away from overdependence on China. Officials quoted by Reuters say PM Modi’s meetings will focus heavily on trade, manufacturing partnerships and technology collaboration.
Netherlands Talks To Focus On Chips, Ports And Water
In the Netherlands, discussions are expected around semiconductors, clean technology, water management and logistics infrastructure.
The Financial Express reports that the Dutch are key players in semiconductor equipment manufacturing and port connectivity, both crucial for India’s manufacturing ambitions and the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Green hydrogen and maritime cooperation are also likely to feature prominently in the talks.
Nordic Nations Important For Green Tech And Innovation
The Sweden and Norway leg of the visit is tied closely to the India-Nordic Summit framework.
According to The Statesman, India is looking to attract Nordic investments in green energy, battery technology, climate innovation, shipping and AI. The Nordic countries are also viewed as important partners in clean manufacturing and sustainable urban technology.
Italy Visit’s Strategic And Economic Angle
PM Modi’s Italy visit is expected to focus on defence manufacturing, industrial investment and strategic cooperation in the Mediterranean region.
Italy has emerged as an increasingly important European partner for India, particularly in mobility, design, manufacturing and connectivity projects linked to IMEC.
The India-Middle East-Europe Corridor, seen as a major alternative trade route linking India to Europe via the Gulf, hangs over much of the diplomacy during this trip. With conflict in West Asia threatening shipping lanes and energy routes, India is trying to ensure that long-term infrastructure and connectivity plans remain on track.
Energy, AI And Defence Form The New Triangle
Unlike older diplomatic visits focused mainly on trade, this tour reflects how India’s foreign policy priorities are changing.
The key themes now are energy security, critical technologies like AI and semiconductors, and defence and strategic manufacturing. Officials quoted by The Tribune say these sectors will define India’s next phase of global partnerships.
The visit comes at a particularly sensitive moment for India’s economy. Strengthening ties with energy suppliers and attracting investments has therefore become an immediate economic priority, not just a diplomatic exercise.
