Few films in Karan Johar’s career have sparked as much debate as Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Bold for its time and unapologetic in its gaze at infidelity within marriage, the 2006 drama, led by Shah Rukh Khan,
Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji, was met with sharply divided reactions upon release. Today, however, it is increasingly revisited as one of Johar’s most layered and provocative works.
Now, nearly two decades later, the filmmaker is returning to that emotional terrain, this time with a long-form series adaptation.
From Polarising Film to Expansive Series
Speaking recently, Karan Johar revealed that Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is being reimagined as a long-format show. Reflecting on the film’s initial reception, he acknowledged how deeply it unsettled audiences.
“We’re actually adapting it into a long-form series. The root of that film… it was released in 2006 to very polarised responses,” he said, recalling how people questioned his intent at the time. “Many asked me if I was unwell after that film, saying, ‘How can you endorse infidelity?’ And I was like, ‘How can you endorse something that’s already so sold out?’”
The series, still under wraps in terms of platform and casting, is expected to explore the same emotional conflicts with greater depth, something the format naturally allows.
A Film That Held Up a Mirror
Johar also shared a telling anecdote from an early screening that captures the discomfort the film triggered. During a scene where Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji’s characters check into a hotel, a couple in the audience initially dismissed it as a dream sequence. When it became clear that it wasn’t, they chose to walk out.
For Johar, that moment revealed a deeper contradiction. “We are in such a polarised audience space… people judge what happens in their homes, they brush it under the carpet, but they don’t want to watch it on screen, even though it’s probably a reality in their own lives,” he reflected.
It is precisely this tension, between lived truth and societal denial, that made Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna stand out then and continues to give it relevance now.
What to Expect From the Adaptation
While Johar has remained guarded about specifics, he confirmed that the project is in development and will be announced soon. The long-form structure is likely to allow a more nuanced exploration of relationships, morality and emotional complexity, themes that were central to the original but constrained by the runtime of a feature film.
Koffee With Karan Set to Return
In the same interaction, Johar also confirmed the return of his popular chat show Koffee with Karan. With a smile, he revealed that Season 9 is slated for a Diwali release this year.
Launched in 2004, the show has become one of Bollywood’s most talked-about platforms, often generating headlines as much for its candid conversations as for the controversies that follow.
Looking Ahead
Karan Johar was last seen behind the director’s chair with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. With the upcoming series adaptation of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, he appears ready to revisit one of his most divisive narratives, this time with the space to explore its emotional intricacies in far greater detail.
If the original questioned the idea of love within marriage, the series could well push that conversation even further.
